Leading Chicago TMJ Practitioner Chosen As Editor of CRANIO Journal. Dr. Shapira is Well Known for Treatment and Elimination of Headaches, Migraines, Trigeminal Neuralgia, TMJ and Sleep Disorders

Researcher, Educator, and Practitioner Dr. Ira L. Shapira has been selected by Dr. Riley Lunn, the Founder and Editor in Chief of CRANIO: the Journal of Craniomandibular & Sleep Practice. Dr. Shapira practices in Highland Park and Gurnee, Illinois

CHICAGO, IL, January 26, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — The CRANIO Journal was the very first journal dedicated to TMJ Disorders and the treatment of related pain and dysfunction. It was founded in 1982 by Dr. Riley Lunn, who has done an exceptional job for 39 years as its Editor in Chief.

The Editorial Board of the CRANIO Journal received the following letter from Dr. Riley Lunn on Wednesday, January 19th.

After 39 years as Editor in Chief of CRANIO, the time has come for me to step down. I have been allowed to hand-pick my replacement, and I am pleased to announce my successor, who has the support of our current publisher, Taylor & Francis. Dr. Ira Shapira, of Gurnee, IL, USA, is currently a CRANIO Editor, having worked with our Journal for the past four years. He is highly regarded on the Journal staff and has been a constant source of information and Journal knowledge. Additionally, his knowledge in the fields of TMD and dental sleep medicine is superb. His participation in CE courses and contributions to manuscripts and other notable contributions is unmatched. His desire to follow me as Editor in Chief is welcome. We have had numerous discussions about his role as “new” Editor in Chief, and, while expanding CRANIO’s horizon, he still seems willing to hold the course that has made CRANIO the flagship publication in TMJ and sleep medicine for the past 40 years.

CRANIO continues to generate interest, demonstrated by the number of full-text article downloads increasing in the 3rd quarter by over 4,000 in the past year (11,674 in 2020 and 15,702 in 2021). Our 2020 Impact Factor increased to 2.020 (from 2019’s score of 1.173), and our 5-year Impact Factor increased from 1.000 in 2019 to 1.882 in 2020. I am confident that with Ira’s leadership, this upward trajectory will continue.

Donna Knauss, my wonderful “right hand” at the Journal for the past 12 ½ years, will retain her role as Managing Editor, working with Ira, allowing a smooth transition for CRANIO’s future.

I want to thank you for your part in helping to make CRANIO the “go to” resource for craniomandibular and sleep practice. We couldn’t maintain our high standards without your help.

Sincerely,
Riley H. Lunn, DDS
Founder and Editor in Chief 1982-2021

Dr. Shapira has had numerous articles published in CRANIO over the years. He was originally appointed to the Editorial Board of CRANIO in 2018 as a reviewer and as Craniofacial Pain Editor in 2019.

When CRANIO changed its name from the Journal of Craniomandibular Practice to the Journal of Craniomandibular & Sleep Practice in 2013, Editor in Chief Dr. Riley Lunn called on Dr. Shapira to write the guest editorial in that issue due to his generally accepted expertise in treating Sleep Apnea and snoring with oral appliances: “TMJ Alias, The Great Imposter, Has a Co-Conspirator: Poor Sleep,” https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1179/crn.2013.001

Dr. Shapira was the first dentist to become a professor in sleep disorders at any medical school in the United States. He was appointed as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Rush Medical School’s Sleep Disorder Center under Dr. Rosalind Cartwright in 1985 and held that position until 1991. He returned to Rush at the request of Dr. Cartwright from 1998- 1991. Dr. Cartwright is generally considered the “Mother of Dental Sleep Medicine”.

The Sleep Disorders Dental Society (SDDS) was the very first dental sleep organization in the world and later became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Shapira was one of 20 original founding / charter members in 1991. He was later credentialed by the SDDS, a distinction held by fewer than 100 dentists worldwide. The SDDS later became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). The AADSM formed the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, and Dr. Shapira was one of the first dentists to become a Diplomate of that Board. He is also a Diplomate of The American Board of Sleep and Breathing.

The complete history of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine can be found at https://www.aadsm.org/about.php

Dr. Shapira has over four decades helping patients suffering from severe Orofacial Pain, Sleep Disorders, Migraines, and TMJ pain to improve their quality of life. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the treatment of sleep disorders and TMJ disorders and their common developmental pathways. One of his 1998 lectures on Anti-Aging Dentistry was made into a chapter in a textbook of Anti-aging medicine. Dr. Shapira is a long-term Dental Editor of Sleep and Health Journal.

Teaching physicians, dentists, and patients of the use of Sphenopalatine Ganglion Blocks (SPG) to control and eliminate a wide variety of painful conditions is a passion of Dr. Shapira. SPG Blocks were featured in the book, “Miracles on Park Avenue.” A new 2018 article in the International Cardiology Journal has shown that Sphenopalatine Ganglion Blocks can treat essential hypertension. SPG Blocks are also used to treat general anxiety symptoms and panic attacks and can also help PTSD. Dr. Shapira is a leading advocate of making Self Administration of SPG Blocks (SASPGB) a standard medical approach. He created www.SphenoplatineGanglionBlocks.com (www.spgblocks.com) to spread information about medical benefits of Self-Administered SPG Blocks (SASPGB). In May, 2019, CRANIO published the following article:

“Neuromuscular dentistry and the role of the autonomic nervous system: Sphenopalatine ganglion blocks and neuromodulation. An International College of Cranio Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO) position paper.”

There are over 200 video testimonials of Chronic pain and Sleep Disorder patients treated by Dr. Shapira: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk9Bfz6pklC7_UluWFHzLrg/videos

Dr. Shapira has dedicated his professional life to treating severe chronic head and neck pain, TMJ disorders, and trigeminally innervated headaches, including SUNCT, Tension Headaches, Cluster Headaches (TACs), and migraines, in addition to treating sleep apnea with comfortable oral appliances. Because of his experiences, he is also eminently informed on a wide variety of other sleep disorders.

Delany Dental Care (www.delanydentalcare.com) was founded by Dr. Shapira in 1984, and Dr. Mark Amidei became his full partner after finishing a general practice residency at Northwestern Dental School. Delany Dental Care is a General Dental Practice where Dr. Shapira also treats chronic pain and sleep disorders. On February 27th, 2020, Drs. Shapira and Amidei sold their practice to escape the administrative work of running a practice to focus on patient care. Ten days after the sale, their office was closed for several months due to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. Even though they no longer owned the practice, Drs. Shapira and Amidei personally paid to put Plasma filters in all five overhead furnaces, and in all treatment rooms, they placed high-end combination HEPA /Plasma filters to protect the safety of their patients and their team.
Dr. Shapira opened a Highland Park office (www.ThinkBetterLife.com), which is dedicated to the treatment of TMJ & Sleep Disorders, Chronic Headaches, and Migraines.

The I HATE CPAP (www.ihatecpap.com) and I HATE HEADACHE (www.ihateheadaches.org) websites were developed by Dr. Shapira to help patients find help with these difficult medical disorders that medicine can rarely treat adequately without a dental collaboration. Dr. Shapira did research in the 1980s as a visiting assistant professor at Rush Medical School, where he worked with Rosalind Cartwright, PhD, who is primarily responsible for the entire field of Dental Sleep Medicine. He also studied Neuromuscular Dentistry with Dr. Barney Jankelson, who created the initial concepts that neuromuscular dentistry still uses today and who created the company Myotronics that is the leading manufacturer of instrumentation used by Neuromuscular Dentistry.

Dr. Shapira is a Diplomate of The American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, a Diplomate of the American Academy of Integrative Pain Management, a Fellow and Master of the International College of CranioMandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO), and a graduate of the Las Vegas Institute (LVI). He is a founding member of the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea (SOSA). He is the current Vice President of ICCMO and a former National and International Regent of ICCMO, Secretary and the representative and past Chair of the Alliance of TMD organizations (the TMD ALLIANCE).

Dr. Shapira also holds several patents on methods and devices for the prophylactic minimally invasive early removal of wisdom teeth and collection of bone marrow and stem cells. He is currently working with Dr. Tom Diekwisch at Baylor University in Texas to prove these stem cells can change people’s lives for the better. Dr. Shapira is a licensed general dentist in Illinois and Wisconsin.
